Does your pet misbehave sometimes?

Does your dog jump up at visitors? Does your cat scratch your best sofa?

Do not despair, help is at hand!

Many pet owners complain that their pets misbehave, but in fact these animals are simply carrying out their natural behaviours. When we bring them into our homes, we instantly expect them to behave like the ‘perfect pet’. But of course, as any animal lover will know, this does not always happen. This is almost always because we expect our furry friends to ‘know’ what we consider to be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ without actually taking the time to teach them.

Did you know that some of the most common behaviour problems reported by pet owners are:

Dogs

  • Jumping up at visitors
  • Pulling on the lead
  • Lack of obedience
  • Separation anxiety
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • House soiling
  • Digging up the garden
  • Barking

Cats

  • Inappropriate urination
  • Scratching furniture
  • Aggressive behaviour towards other cats
  • Biting or scratching their owners

Rabbits

  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Hair plucking

Parrots

  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Feather plucking

Common as these may be, few owners take steps to improve their pet’s behaviour – often because they don’t think they have the time or are unsure of what to do. With the right guidance however, your pet can not only learn to behave more appropriately, but to redirect its instinctive behaviour to a more acceptable environment, while remaining enjoyable.
